Chelsea, MI. – On a very nice Thursday afternoon, the Chelsea Bulldogs freshman football team played host to their rivals from down the road, the Dexter Dreadnaughts. No love is lost between these schools and teams, and the Bulldogs let it show by dominating Dexter in a 34-0 shutout victory for their third victory of the season.
In the first quarter, both teams held each other to very little gain, but in the second quarter, the Bulldogs struck furiously. The coaches took a big gamble on a fourth down and long. Quarterback Sam Kneffel hit Easton Fahlstrom with a good throw, with Fahlstrom eluding the defense and gaining 45 yards for the Bulldog score. Matheus Adam-Rita hit the extra point for the 7-0 lead.
On the next Dexter drive, quarterback Drew MacDonnell’s pass was picked off by Fahlsrom, who returned it for the score. After an extra point, the Bulldogs had a 14-0 lead. On the next drive, it was another solid defensive play as Chelsea forced a fumble and recovered on their 40-yard line. Chelsea drove downfield, and Cameron Cybart drove the ball in the end zone for a big Bulldog 21-0 lead.
As Dexter was driving down the field to try to cut into the Bulldog lead right before the half, it was Fahlstrom picking off the deep pass to send the teams into the locker rooms with a big Bulldog 21-0 lead!
Dexter received the ball after the half but couldn’t do much with it, and with 3:16 left to go in the third quarter, it was Fahlstrom scoring again, almost completely untouched by the defense for a huge 76-yard run and score, giving the Bulldogs a huge 27-0 lead.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, it was Jake Weinberg scoring for the Bulldogs, increasing an already wide margin as the Bulldogs’ defense clamped down on Dexter, and many kids who don’t get a lot of playing time were able to get out on the field and play.
“This group is a lot of fun, they didn’t know how different it is between middle school and High school,” Head Coach Dennis Strzyewski stated after the game. “They’re starting to learn and play faster, and I’m really proud of them. It’s really good for them to start having success on the field.”
Chelsea Freshmen are now 3-2 on the season, and this was their last home game of the season. This coming up Thursday, October 2nd, they will head to Saline (3-2) to take on the Hornets. Game time is set for 4:30.
