Williamston, MI. – The Williamston Hornets girls basketball team moved into a first-place tie in the Capital Area Athletics Conference (CAAC) Red Division with a thrilling come from behind victory. The 45-44 victory ties them for first with rival Haslett, both standing atop the conference with 8-1 records. It was the Hornets 8th win in a row.
Both teams started out strong but Haslett took an early lead and in a game full of back and forth lead changes, the Vikings started to pull away early in the 4th quarter. But with some deep threes, solid defense, and great strategic coaching from Hornet Head Coach Pete Cool, the Hornets were able to pull back in it. In the waning moments of the game with 35 seconds left, Freshman Isabel Lindo hit a 3 to give the Hornets a 43-41 lead.
Senior Kenzie Lewis then iced the game with two clutch free throws for the victory. The Bowling Green prospect Lewis led all scorers with 18 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assist, and 5 steals. Lindo finished with 6 points and 3 rebounds, while Evey Peplowski and Grace Porrell finished with 5 points each.
The Hornets now stand at 8-1 in conference play (tied with Haslett) and are 15-3 overall. The Hornets will play a non-conference game Tuesday at Michigan Center against the Cascades Conference-leading Cardinals. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
