St. Johns, MI.- The Williamston Hornets easily grounded the St. Johns Red Wings on Tuesday night 79-38. The Hornets stung first as Frankie Toomey drained a quick 3 from the left side and from there on out it was all Williamston. The Hornets defense was relentless as the Red Wings couldn’t get time or space to set up for good shots and the Hornets dominated on the boards.
The Red Wings were no match for the 30th ranked team in the state as they held them almost less than 10 points per quarter including limiting them to only 6 in the third. With a few players battling injuries right now, Williamston Head Coach Tom Lewis rested most of his starters in the fourth quarter.
“Leaving here next year, it’s good to come here and send a message to the younger players,” Senior Cole Kleiver stated. “We came out of here with a good win so I’m happy.”
Kleiver has been a big part of the Hornets success the past few seasons and tonight was no different as he led all scorers with 26 points. Junior big man Joseph Hahnenberg finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds, while sophomore Mitchell Cook, despite playing with 4 fouls, came up big with 14 points, 8 assist and 5 rebounds.
Williamston, which is undefeated in conference play, travels to Fowlerville on Friday, February 16 with tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
