Jackson, MI. – It was a beautiful day for a soccer game, and the Napoleon Pirates traveled to Jackson to take on the Vikings. The last time they met was in Napoleon, for the Vikings’ first home game ever, where the teams finished in a 1-1 tie.
Both teams started strong, getting great opportunities, but it was the Vikings who struck first as Senior Keiarh Smith blasted a penalty shot into the back of the net for a big 1-0 lead at about 11 minutes into the game. 5 minutes later, Legion Wingart gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead as he scored off a corner kick. At about the 6-minute mark, the Pirates’ Alex Grosse cut the lead in half with an assist from fellow exchange student Harry Beerzins. With only seconds left on the clock in the first half, it was Grosse tying the game up with his second goal of the night.
After the half, 7 minutes in, it was Grosse getting the hat trick with another assist by Beerzins to give the Pirates the 3-2 lead. 6 minutes later, the Vikings Sophomore Jayden Smith tied the game at 3 as he scored a big goal. At the 17-minute mark, the Vikings got a corner kick, and after 4 in a row, a penalty was committed by the Pirates, giving the Vikings William Patterson a penalty kick. He drilled the ball into the goal for a 4-3 Vikings lead. With less than 7 minutes to go, Grosse scored his fourth goal of the night off an assist from Donovan Keinath, tying the game at 4 each. That is where the game would finish, as both teams tried hard for the victory.
The Vikings (0-5-2) will travel to Adrian on Wednesday for a 5 o’clock game, while the Pirates (1-3-5) will travel to Jackson Northwest on October 8th for a 5 o’clock game.
