Indiana Softball To Host Ohio State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana softball (25-9, 5-0 B1G) welcomes Ohio State (21-8, 2-1 B1G) to Andy Mohr Field starting on Friday, March 31.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Indiana Hoosiers swept Purdue in a doubleheader on Wednesday evening at Bittinger Stadium, winning the first game 8-5 followed by a gritty 5-4 win for the sweep. 
  • Freshman Avery Parker had a team-high .500 with three hits, one home run, and two RBI. She scored three runs.
  • Teammate Taryn Kern collected two hits for two home runs with three RBI and two runs scored. The freshman also totaled four free passes and had a stellar performance on the field with five assists and six putouts.
  • Sophomore Brianna Copeland picked up her 11th win inside the circle while Freshman Sophie Kleiman earned her first in the rivalry matchup.
  • Copeland hit .429 with three hits including one double, two home runs, and three RBI.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

  • Ohio State (21-8, 2-1 B1G) is coming off a 17-6 run-rule victory over the Dayton Flyers on Wednesday evening.
  • The Buckeyes have won the last 15 of 16 games with a 3-1 loss against Michigan in 10 innings.
  • OSU is third in the conference in hitting posting a .313 batting average.
  • Sophomore Melina Wilkison leads the team with a .400 batting average with an OPS of 1.118. She has totaled 28 hits, six doubles, three triples, four home runs, and 27 RBI in 94 at-bats. The Greensburg, Ind. native, has also earned 11 free passes with nine walks and two hit-by-pitches on the season.
  • Junior Allison Smith is 11-4 from the mound this season. She ranks second in strikeouts (130), fifth in wins (11), sixth in complete games (8) and third in innings pitched (100.2) in the Big Ten. Smith has a 1.27 ERA with 130 strikeouts in 100.2 innings pitched.

SERIES NOTES

  • Indiana holds a 66-54 advantage over OSU. The Buckeyes took the series last season in Columbus winning two out of the three games.
  • The two teams last met in Bloomington in 2021 where Indiana defeated OSU winning three out of the four scheduled games.

  • The Hoosiers win 18 straight to tie the longest win streak set by the 1983 team in program history after their sweep over Purdue.

SARAH STONE SHOWIN’ OUT

  • Indiana sophomore first basemen Sarah Stone carried the Hoosier’s offense as they swept the No. 22 ranked Maryland Terrapins and extended their win streak to 15.
  • She earned Big Ten Co-Player of the Week after batting in 10 runners, with five hits, one double, and three home runs.
  • She had a team-high 1.364 slugging percentage with a 1.781 OPS on the weekend.
  • The Bedford, Ind., native had the walk-off hit in game one of the series against the Terps.
  • In game two, she hit a three RBI bomb in the first inning providing momentum for the squad.
  • She carried that over into the final game of the series, going yard two times, and adding four more RBI.

TARYN IT UP

  • Teammate Taryn Kern collected two hits for two home runs with three RBI and two runs scored in her first games against archrival Purdue. The freshman also totaled four free passes and had a stellar performance on the field with five assists and six putouts.
  • Last weekend, Kern hit a team-high batting average of .556 as they extended their win streak to 15 and swept the No. 22 ranked Maryland Terrapins earning herself Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the third straight week.
  • She totaled five hits with two doubles, two home runs with three RBI with an outstanding 2.111 OPS.
  • The San Jose, Calif., native leads the Big Ten in six categories, slugging percentage (1.048), OBS (.602), OPS (1.650), RBI (39), home runs (14), and walks (25).
  • The IU freshman is second in the conference in batting average (.446) and runs scored (37).
  • She batted .667 on the week with an OPS of 2.735. She held an eye-popping slugging percentage of 1.917 and an on-base percentage of .818 including four home runs, one double, one triple, and 11 RBI.

HOME RUN HISTORY

  • Kern is on base to set a new single-season record for most home runs in a season. She currently sits at 14 and is looking to pass Hall of Famer and Olympian Michelle Venturella who totaled 16 bombs in the 1994 season.

OUT OF THE PARK(ER)

  • Freshman Avery Parker had a team-high .500 with three hits, one home run, and two RBI. She scored three runs.
  • She has a career total of seven home runs in her rookie season.
  • On the season, she holds a batting average of .351 with 26 hits. She has scored 21 runs, seven doubles, and one triple totaling 13 RBI.
  • Parker hit her first career home run against Lipscomb. She added three more on the weekend, totaling eight RBI in Nashville, Tenn.  

COPELAND IN THE CIRCLE

  • Sophomore pitcher Brianna Copeland picked up her 11th win inside the circle after earning the win in game one against archrival Purdue.
  • The Pelham, Ala., native holds a 2.37 ERA with 76.2 innings pitched and 79 strikeouts.

HOOSIER BATS ON FIRE

  • Indiana leads the Big Ten in batting with a .333 average on the season. The cream and crimson have totaled 280 hits, 58 doubles, five triples, and 44 home runs.
  • They have tallied 220 RBI along with 115 free passes and 52 hits by the pitch.
