Jonesville, MI. – The sun shone brightly on a beautiful Monday evening as the Jonesville Comets hosted the Pirates of Napoleon in a soccer game. The Comets started with the ball first, but the Pirates took over offensively very quickly. They kept the ball in the Comets’ zone for most of the first half, getting many great opportunities, but the Comet goalkeeper Joslynn Bitar did a good job keeping the Pirates off the board.
With about 24 minutes of the first half gone, Pirate Sophomore Zoey Berkeypile received a penalty kick. She lined up for her shot and made a great kick, blasting it past the right side of the goalkeeper Bitar and putting her Pirates up 1-0. It was also her first High school goal scored.
The Pirates took the 1-0 lead into the half despite many great chances. After the half, the Pirates made some great adjustments, and with about 15 minutes passed, Marisa Stark, under a ton of pressure, made a great shot to give the Pirates a big 2-0 lead. The Pirates kept the pressure off, and with and 8 and a half minutes left in the game, Lily Eagen put the ball over the goalkeeper’s head into the back of the net. Less than a minute later, Eagen scored again, giving the Pirates a huge 4-0 lead and allowing for multiple substitutions to come in for the Pirates.
The Pirates’ defense kept the Comets from giving up too many chances. Pirates goalkeeper Alessia Romagnuolo wasn’t tested much, but when she was, she came up big for her fifth shutout of the season in only her first year of playing organized soccer.
Freshman Kate Van Wagnen and Senior Meghan Smith had several great scoring chances and helped their team’s offense a lot, each finishing with a big assist.
The Pirates (5-8-1) will travel to Hanover for a 5:30 match on Wednesday, the 13th. Then, on Thursday, they will host Leslie on Senior Night. The Senior activities will begin at 5:10, with the game starting at 5:30
