Trio of Softball Hoosiers Named to CSC Academic All-America Team

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Redshirt junior Cora Bassett and sophomore duo Heather Johnson and Brianna Copeland were named to the 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Bassett is working towards a degree in Management and Human Organization.

Bassett has played in 101 games totaling 119 runs scored, 114 hits, 18 home runs, and 57 RBI in her Hoosier career. She has helped lead the Hoosiers to a 23-game program-record win streak as a leadoff hitter in the Indiana lineup.

The Newburgh, Ind., native has hit three leadoff homers out of her five on the season holding a .455 on-base percentage and a .524 slugging percentage.  Bassett earned Big Ten Player of the Week after batting .500 in the series sweep over Michigan.

She was named First Team All-Big Ten as a junior and earned NFCA All-Region Second Team.

Last season, she set Indiana single-season records for doubles (19) and tied the single-season record for runs scored (57). She has now scored 62 runs this season and is on pace to reach the doubles record. She will return for her fifth year next Spring.

Copeland is pursuing a degree in Comprehensive design. She holds a 21-3 record inside the circle boasting a 2.86 ERA.

She has recorded 135 strikeouts in 159 innings pitched. Copeland holds a 2.86 ERA in 43 appearances and 25 starts. Offensively, Copeland is hitting .327 on the season leading the team with 15 doubles. The power hitter has also tallied 13 home runs, one triple, and 46 RBI on the season. The Pelham, Ala., native threw her first career no-hitter during the opening weekend against Prairie View A&M at the NFCA Classic.

Johnson is pursuing a degree in Exercise Science at the Indiana School of Public Health.

She has helped the Hoosiers to a program-record 23-game win streak. She holds a 15-6 record on the mound this season and four saves.

On the season, Johnson has pitched 111.1 innings with 51 strikeouts for a 3.46 ERA. In her 42 appearances, she has started in 21 games with one shutout.

As an All-District honoree, they will advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. Those selected for the first, second, and third team Academic All-America will be announced on June 6.
 
Each CSC member can vote to determine the selection for the All-America teams. Voting is currently open until May 23.
