The finalists for the 2022 Mick McCabe Miss Basketball award were released Friday morning and several familiar names on the basketball scene made the cut. This year features several top talented players in the state.
The 41st installment of the prestigious award will go to either Ypsilanti Arbor Prep’s Mya Petticord, Detroit Edison’s Ruby Whitehorn, Grand Rapids West Catholic’s Abbey Kimball, or Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central’s Theryn Hallock.
The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, in conjunction with the Detroit Free Press, selected the four finalists. Last year’s race included five finalists.
The first nominee is Theryn Hallock from Grad Rapids Forest Hills Central. The 4-star standout guard surpassed the 1,500-point mark in her career by scoring a school-record 50 points in a win over Greenville and is averaging 26.6 points, 11 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 6.5 steals this season. She has committed to play for Head Coach Suzy Merchant’s Michigan State Spartans next season.
The next nominee is Abbey Kimball, a guard from Grand Rapids West Catholic. Kimball is one of the state’s premier shooters and has been as consistent as any player this season. The 4-star recruit is averaging more than 26 points per game and shooting well over 40% from deep to lead West Catholic to an 18-1 record. She has committed to Michigan State.
The third nominee is Ypsilanti Arbor Prep guard Mya Petticord. The 4 star Texas A & M commit has helped lead her Gators to an 18-2 record playing some of the toughest competition in the state. She is averaging over 20 points a game and does it all on the court.
The final candidate is Detroit Edison 5 star Clemson commit Ruby Whitehorn. Despite her team not playing many games this year, only 14 because of many scheduling problems, she has done an outstanding job on the court.
